WiiSport Resort US version: working great

Using the same trick ( partition 1 (should say DATA) -> sys -> mpls_movie -> player.dol), I was able to get WiiSports Resort US version running. There was some hiccup while playing that instruction video, but it turns out I don't really need to watch the whole thing. Just get to that page, and then quit, and that's it.

I find the game more enjoyable now that I can understand all the instructions.

Resident Evil remake for Wii: Piece of shit

I didn't realize how horrible to play mechanism of the original Resident Evil was until I played the remake of Resident Evil for Wii a while before. The play mechanism was totally preserved, and what a shitty idea it was, especially after being spoiled by all the control mechanism of modern day games, going back to this comprising movement mechanism (in order to compensate the lack of CPU power to render the read 3D environment and camera movement) is like forcing you to use command prompt to do everything.

Sure some may still be able to do it and even enjoy it. Me, on the other hand, has other better things to do then spending time to accomodate an old school game.

I want my last 1 hour back.

Finally WiiMotion Plus and Wii Sports Resort running!

I was pretty excited after I set up WiiMotion Plus, thinking that I am about the play Wii Sports Resort Japanese edition. Instead, I got an Error 2 message.

It turns out that I am not the only one who got the problem, and in fact someone already figure out the solution.

So I followed the instruction by downloading Wiiscrubber, ran it and extracted the dol out. BTW, really don't understand why I need to use MakeKeyBin.exe to create the key. But anyway, I was just following the instruction.

So I put the file at the root of my SD card, name it RZTJ01.dol (basically it has to match whatever 6 character showing up on the game selection menu). And then I used the WAD version of the USB loader GX.

But then, several problems: Update does not work with the WAD version. Also I DID NOT see the Alternative DOL menu items showing at the custom path or game setting menu. That got me fustrated for about an hour or so.

Eventaully I gave up the WAD version, and go for the USB_Loader_GX UNEO_Forwarder_16.06.09.rar by loading the boot.dol from the Homebrew Channel. Setill no luck. But this time when I use the update in USB Loader GX to do Update ALL, I successfully updated the USB Loader GX to version 56x. And the Alternative DOL menu finally showing up!

The rest are pretty easy. I just turn on the alternative DOL, watch the Japanese instruction video. And now that I am back to the game menu, I turn OFF the alternative DOL. and Boom, Wii Sports Resort just loaded.

BTW, more awesome instruction video.

Using GameCube controller with Mario Kart Wii: awesome

I tried using the Wiimote and then tried using GameCube controller to play Mart Kart Wii. To be, using GameCube controller is so much better an experience. I may try using the Wiimote every once in a while, but if I really want to win, or get a better grab on my car, I will pick the GameCube controller.

USB Loader doesn't beng affected by wired USB Keyboard

Having USB keyboard connect to the another port at the back of Wii does not seem to affect Wii's ability of using USB Loader at all. I got a game loading properly just a while ago. So that's a good thing.

Boom Blox hanged for a while, but ....

So I didn't experience any problem problem with USB Loader for a good one day, but then a while ago when I was playing Boom Blox tutorial section, I got a screen hanging problem. It was not big deal since each level was saved automatically. But I just have to remind myself to treat USB Loader mainly as a backup scheme.

Scary Wii memory problem .. and solution

After adding too many WiiWare using WAD Installer, I suddenly encountered a horrible problem: Block Open became zero, and even after I kept removing items from the memory, the open block is STILL ZERO. I have to admit that I was horrified.

Luckily, after kept removing stuff for while, suddenly the Blocks Open starts decrease. So I continue removed even more stuff from the Wii memory.

Eventually, I learned a few things:

  • Channels instead using WAD will render to useless if you tried to move them to SD card, which I think is totally fair. Stuff you actually brought should be able to move to SD card.
  • You can't even move back those channels you installed with WAD from SD card to Wii. Again, fair.
  • Regular channels like "Everybody vote channel" works OK on SD card.
  • Stuff you installed with WAD Manager should be uninstalled with WAD Manager.
  • You can get Error -1022 if you used up all the blocks. PLEASE don't leave WAD Manager and UNINSTALL some apps first or you won't be able to access the WAD manager again (until you free up enough blocks).
So that means you can only install so many WiiWare of Virtual Console using WAD installer. So be careful.

Similar to Channel, there's something you need to know about Save Game:

  • You cannot move 8 bit and 16 bit virtual console save game to SD card.
  • You CAN move 32 bit virtual conosle save game to SD card.
  • Back up your save game frequently

USB Loader is such a strange thing

So I was about to totally give up USB Loader for now until it get stabilize. Then this morning, because of sickness, I stay at home. Suddenly I have an idea: instead of using the 80Gb harddisk that has problem, maybe I can try my 500Gb harddisk.

So I unplug the short USB cable from the 80Gb harddisk and hook it to 500Gb harddisk. So far so good.

And then during the middle of copying a disc, the copying stopped. So I thought, maybe the cable has problem. So I swapped to a longer cable. And then it worked.

And then it stucked on another disc, and this time I simple unplug the cable, and reconnect again, and the ripping continue. Funny.

And not only that, but now I found that the games that failed before started working:
  • WiiSport no longer hanging after finishing a Bowling game.
  • Big Brain Academy Wii degree does not hang in the beginning anymore.
  • PunchOut does not hang after selecting a non-available character
  • Excite Truck won't stuck at the starting screen
I don't know what is going on, but somehow I have a feeling that unplug and replug in the USB cable may have something to do with it. Need to reserach more.

Forget about USB Loader ..... for now

After finishing a level of No More Heroes which loaded from USB harddisk using USB Loader 1.5, and yet not able to save the game, I told myself: "Enough of this stuff."

So I am pulling all my Wii discs out again, and will revisit the scene like 3 months later. Maybe by that time things will be better. But at least for now I much rather using the more reliable way: loading from disc.

More problem on USB loader

Super Monkey Ball hanged on the start menu, while the China Goddness hanged after finishing the level.

WiiConnect24 has to be on

WiiConnect24 has to be on or otherwise WiiSport will hang up at starting screen.

Hang at Bowling

After I finished a game of Bowling at WiiSport, the machine hanged.

Coding for Wii?

Writing program for Wii is still not an easy task, but for those who are dedicated, they can take a look at these:

Personally I think programming for iPhoneOS seems more approachable .

Excite Truck not working on my case

I tried Excite Truck and it does NOT work on my USB Loader 1.5 even though it's supposed to be compatible. But then it could be because of the bad ISO I got in the first place, or because of the 4.0 firmware. No biggy since I am not a big fan of the game anyway.

Bad Component video signal on Wii because of ... external harddisk?

Stupid screen problem

I found that when I use the Composite connection to conenct my Wii to my DELL 24 inch Ultrasharp monitor, the screen will stay in a specific screen aspect ratio mode all the mode. Problem comes with I switch between virtual console and regular wide screen Wii game. All the Virtual Console screen got squahsed. It was not horrible, but it's a bit anonying. Sure I can manually change the aspect ratio, but I was wondering if there's any better way to solve this problem.

And using Component cable does NOT solve the problem. In fact, by testing the component cable, I found something very odd: the USB harddisk cable I hooked at the back of the Wii actually affect the VIDEO SIGNAL. In fact, the signal was PRETTY BAD when using the component cable with USB harddisk hooked to the Wii. Using Compsosite cable and I still see a little bit of the noise, but not terribly bad.

Since I stick with the USB harddisk, so so long to the Component cable for Wii.

I also tried different cables. Not much help. Come to think of is, maybe the casing of the external USB harddisk box has something to do with it.

How to load save game for N64 Virtual Console

I haven't got all the Stars for Mario 64 yet, and while I enjoy making the progress by my won effort instead of chatting, I could get frustrated at certain level, and wish I could keep practicing on that level. That's why I was starting to look around and see if it's possible to load the save game posted by other netizens into my Mario 64 Virtual Console on Wii. And I just figured that out.

  1. Back up your original save game from the memory: You can only have one save game in your Wii console (and so is on the SD card). So before you mess with anything, back up your save game to your SD card using the Save Game Management screen on Wii. Once you copied to SD card, you can find the game in "\private\wii\title\" in the card. For instance, my Mario 64 save game is in "\private\wii\title\NAAE" with the file name "data.bin".
  2. Create a new folder in the title folder and move your save game to that folder. I created one called "2009-06-14 - My Orginal Save". Once in a new folder, Wii will not mess with your backup save file.
  3. Download your save game from the Net. I grab mine from GameFAQ.
  4. Rename the .bin file you downloaded to data.bin, and put it in your SD card's "title" folder we mentioned in step 2.
  5. Use Wii Save Game management console to copy the save game to your Wii.
  6. Mission accomplished.

RPG that I may interest in

So I looked around and see if there's any worthy RPG that I should try since I left the Wii scene for quite a while. Based on what I read, these seem to be great candidates:

While the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicle seems a "waste of my time".

Playing GameCube backup on Wii with 4.0U?

Seems like there's a way based on Yahoo answer. So I downloaded SoftMii, and let's see what will happen after I installed it.

Always enjoying Super Mario Brothers

So I just got several Virtual Console games for Nintendo Wii. They are all part of the Super Mario series, and here's my comments:

- Super Mario Brothers : Awesome

Playing Super Mario Brothers is always fun, and with the Wii controller, the experience is still engaging. And it seems like Nintendo spent sometime to emulate even the detail of the game. One thing I enjoyed a lot was that the "infinite" 1-up trick at World 3-1 is still working, although you have to be careful because if you got they much the remaining player value will roll to negative and you got a sudden death. I didn't dare to figure out what was the right among since I knew I already got plenty of player after a while. I also realize that the emulator seems to even emulate the NTSC blur effect. I didn't see that exact same effect in a PC NES emulator. So obivous Nintendo go extra mile to make this Virtual Conosle a realistic experience.

One huge plus for me: Wii keeps track of the save game down to the fact taht it SAVE the STATE of the game play. So if in the middle of the game you suddenly realize that you have something else to do, no problem, just go back to the Wii manual and the state of your game will be saved. The next time you come back, you will continue at the spot where you left off. Very neat indeed.

- Super Mario World : Too bad I don't have the classic controller
I have one huge problem with Super Mario World: it does not work with Wiimote and with my wireless GameCube controller the button mapping was not optimized for the game play. So I either have to get a Classic Controller, stuck with the awkward setting, or not playing it. I choose not playing it.

- Mario 64
With the GameCube controller, the Mario 64 playing experience was awesome. Period.

Now my bigget problem is to discipline myself: do work and study first before playing a few more game.... do work and study more before playing a few more games.......

SD/USB Loader 1.5

"Mortal Kombat Armageddon" and "Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree" doesn't work with SD/USB Loader 1.5. I was surprised that "Big Brain" does not work even though the site (http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/index.php/USB_Loader_v1.x_Game_Compatibility) says it does. Anyway ...
